Walkthroughs: Melemele Island

The Beginning of an Adventure

Are you ready to begin your Alolan Adventure, cousin? Set off to explore and catch 'em all in this tropical region with our complete story walkthrough!

• View the Melemele Island Map

Become a Trainer

When you start the game, you are immediately given a choice of several languages—English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, and Chinese (Cantonese and Mandarin) — in which to play. Professor Kukui and his Rockruff will then appear and give you some information about the Alola Region.

You are then asked to choose a photo for your Trainer Passport. Choose a photo with the gender and skin color you want (don't worry about the hair and eye color, you will be able to change those later). After that, pick a name for yourself.

Getting Your First Pokémon

You will watch a cutscene of a mysterious girl trying to escape from somewhere. The game then skips to three months later with your Mom enjoying her fist day in Alola. Awoken by the house pet Meowth, you can use the circle pad to get out of bed and walk around. Press Ⓑ to run, and Ⓐ to interact with various items. For example, check out the book on your desk to learn two very important adventure rules:

  1. Open the game menu with the Ⓧ Button.
  2. Record your progress with Save.

Go downstairs to talk to your mom and meet Kukui, who tells you that you should go and meet the Melemele Island Kahuna so that you can get your very first Pokémon. Grab your hat and bag from the boxes in your room and follow Kukui to Route 1. For now, you can only talk to people on this route, as you don't have any Pokémon yet.

Follow Kukui to Iki Town - a place where people come to worship the Pokémon that watches over Melemele Island: Tapu Koko. The Kahuna doesn't appear to be in Iki Town so Kukui asks you to find him. The only information that he gives you is that he looks like a Kahuna. Thanks a lot, Kukui!

Walk north to find the mysterious girl from the cutscene earlier. She appears to be talking to something in her bag. Follow her and you'll end up on the Mahalo Trail. A Pokémon escapes from the girl's bag and runs onto a bridge where it quickly becomes surrounded by three Spearows. The girl asks you to help the Pokémon and you discover that its name is Nebby.

Cross the bridge to protect Nebby and watch the cut scene where the bridge breaks with you standing on it. Thankfully you are both saved by a mysterious Pokémon and it drops you back to safety before making a swift exit.

The girl thanks you and gives you a Sparkling Stone that Nebby just found. Walk back with her to Iki Town and Kukui will reveal that the girl is his assistant, Lillie. Soon after, Kahuna Hala enters the town and reveals that the mysterious Pokémon that saved you was Tapu Koko. Complimenting you for your bravery, he wants to give you a Pokémon and presents you with the following three to choose from:

Rowlet has the most weaknesses of the trio. It is vulnerable to Fire, Flying, Poison, Rock, and Ice-type attacks. However, because it's both a Grass and Flying-type Pokémon, it also has a lot of strengths. Its Grass moves are strong against Water, Rock, and Ground-type Pokémon. Its Flying moves are strong against Bug, Fighting, and Grass-type Pokémon.

The Fire-type, Litten, is great when battling Grass, Bug, Ice, and Steel-type Pokémon, but is vulnerable to Water, Rock, and Ground-type moves.

The Water-type, Popplio, has an advantage when facing Fire, Rock, and Ground-type Pokémon, but may struggle against Grass and Electric-type attacks.

Choose your partner and feel free to give it a nickname. Kukui will then hand you a Pokédex (a device that registers any Pokémon you meet) and a Trainer Passport. Press the Ⓧ button to check them out. While you're in the menu, it’s worth familiarising yourself with the game's options.

When you leave Iki Town to show off your first Pokémon to your mom, a boy named Hau shows up and immediately wants to battle you.

Battle with Hau

If you chose Rowlet, Hau will have:

If you chose Litten, Hau will have:

If you chose Popplio, Hau will have:

After a Pokémon battle, you may be prompted to use Pokémon Refresh to groom your Pokémon. Press Ⓨ if you would like to use it immediately. Your Pokémon may be dirty or have tangled hair, so the game will encourage you to take care of this using the various tools available in Pokémon Refresh.

After the battle with Hau, the Sparkling Stone in your bag begins to shine and Hala asks if he can borrow it for closer inspection. He also invites you to the festival that is taking place in Iki Town tomorrow. Don’t worry, Hala will return the stone to you at the festival. After an eventful day, it’s now time for Kukui to take you home.
