Walkthroughs

Poni Grand Trial & Vast Poni Canyon

Located at the center of Poni Island, Vast Poni Canyon is teeming with tough Trainers. There are plenty of battles and items on offer here, as well as a Grand Trial.

Poni Grand Trial

As soon as you approach Hapu, she will challenge you to the Poni Grand Trial.

Hapu uses Ground-type Pokémon so you’ll want to bring Pokémon that use Ice-type attacks as these will be super effective. Grass, Water and Flying-type will also work well here. However, when tackling her Gastrodon, you’ll want to use a Pokémon with Grass-type attacks.

After defeating Hapu, you will have completed the Poni Grand Trial. Hapu will give you Groundium Z and Lillie will give you a Max Revive to heal your Pokémon. Behind the fallen tree next to the cave entrance, you will find a Max Potion.

Entering the First Cave

That may have felt quite easy, buts it’s not over yet! Enter the nearby cave and you’ll meet and battle Veteran Harry. Further along, you can battle Backpacker Perdy. Use Tauros Charge to break the rocks in front of Perdy and grab the Elixir. At the top of the ramp past Perdy, you can also find a Nugget

Drop down and walk up the slope to the south. Break the rocks at the top of the slope to retrieve a Max Potion. At the top of the next slope, you’ll meet Ace Duo Kent and Aimee, who are eager to battle you. After defeating the duo, use Tauros Charge once again to break the rocks at the top of the slope and continue walking to move onto the next area, which is outside.

Top Tip: You will be able to evolve your Magneton, Probopass and Charjabug here. All you have to do is level them up in this area.

Going Through the Second Cave

Walk east into the tall grass to grab a Revive and then cross the bridge to reach the second cave. You can find a hidden X Attack around the corner from the entrance to the second cave. Enter the cave and pick up the Zygarde Cell next to the rock and continue walking to battle Hiker Zachary. Turn right out of the cave and squeeze through the crawl space to find Veteran Lynn. Just north of Lynn, you can pick up an Escape Rope. You will also need to use Mudsdale Gallop to cross the rocky terrain ahead.

Follow the path to the southeast and be prepared to battle Ace Trainer Junko. Continue walking south to exit the cave and pick up TM99 (Dazzling Gleam). Retrace your steps and then head west towards the long bridge to trigger a cutscene. After overcoming her fear and crossing the bridge, Lillie will heal your Pokémon. An X Sp. Atk can be found in the clearing on the south side of the rock.

There is also a photo spot in the middle of the bridge, where you can take photos of Jangmo-o, Hakamo-o, Gigalith, and Lucario.

Spelunking in the Third Cave

Enter the third cave and use Machamp Shove to push the large boulder south until it drops into the hole in the ground. Pick up the Full Restore on your left and then head over to the southern boulder. Push this boulder east until it drops into the hole. Now head over to the last boulder and push it north. The path to the south will lead you to a Dusk Ball and slightly further on, another Zygarde Cell. When you’re ready, climb the ladder to exit the cave.

Across the Bridge and Into the Canyon

You’ll find yourself in another new area. Battle Scientist Ikaika and continue walking to meet and battle Punk Girl Ana by the bridge. On the bridge, you’ll meet an artist called Mina who also happens to be the final Captain in your Island Challenge. Luckily, she isn’t holding any trials at the moment, but she kindly gives you Fairium Z anyway. At the end of the bridge, battle Punk Guy Adam and then make a right to enter the next area. Between the rock and the wall at the end of the bridge, you can find a hidden PP Max.

South of the vines that provide a ramp down from the cliffs, you’ll find a Full Heal. Head over to battle Black Belt Earl and follow the path round until you meet Ace Trainer Hiroshi. You’ll notice that the exit to the south actually leads to the entrance of one of the previous areas, thanks to Machamp’s ability to move the boulders. Head in there to pick up a Zygarde Cell. Head to the group of four rocks in the area behind the fallen tree, here you will find a hidden X Defense.

After defeating Hiroshi, take a closer look at the branches to the left of him and you’ll find a small crawl space. Squeeze through here and continue walking until you reach a large body of water. Use Sharpedo to cross the water and battle Black Belt Terry. South of Terry you can find a fishing spot. Ride Sharpedo to the west to find a Rare Candy on the second shelf of land. From here, head south to the third shelf of land to grab TM35 (Flamethrower)

Head back to where you battled Hiroshi and continue along that path to battle Veteran Heather and Veteran Eric. You have now battled all the Trainers in this area and thankfully Lillie is around to heal your Pokémon. Head to the west end of the cliff and walk through the entrance south of the Machamp Shove puzzle to pick up the final Zygarde Cell. You’ll notice that the gates to the next area resemble those of the Captain’s Gates that you’re used to seeing however, no one is guarding them.
