Ultra Beast Hunt

The Ultra Beast Hunt will have you tracking down strange Pokémon all over Alola. There are five Ultra Beasts to find and some of them will vary depending on which version of the game you're playing. You may even meet some familiar faces along the way.

The Adventure Continues

The day after the festival, Hau will come over and give you the Z-Crystals for the starter Pokémon that you didn’t choose at the beginning of the game. You will receive Decidium Z for Decidueye, Incinium Z for Incineroar and Primarium Z for Primarina. These will be very useful if you ever receive any of these starter Pokémon in a trade.

Hau also mentions the Battle Tree, a place where strong Trainers can battle many times in a row.

An Unexpected Meeting with Familiar Faces

Head outside and a stranger will hand you an Enigmatic Card. Open your bag and examine the card. The card actually appears to be an invitation to the Roadside Motel on Route 8 so it’s a good idea for you to head there now.

Enter the Motel and head to the west side, into one of the guest rooms. Here you will meet Looker and Anabel who require your help to round up the Ultra Beasts that are scattered around Alola.

They’ve received their orders from the International Police so this must be pretty serious! However, you’ll have to battle Pokémon Trainer Anabel first, in order to prove that you’re fit for the job.

Did you know that Anabel also appeared in another Pokémon game? She was the manager of the Battle Tower in Pokémon Emerald. The man, Looker, has also appeared in previous Pokémon games, including Pokémon Black & White, X & Y and Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire.

Some of the Pokémon in Anabel’s party are the same as those that featured in Pokémon Emerald, but they’re pretty strong now at level 61 so you may find this battle a tad challenging.

After you have defeated Anabel, continue on to the Secret Labs in Aether Paradise.

Yet Another Trip to Aether Paradise

Head back to Aether Paradise Island and make your way to B2F in the Aether Foundation building to meet Wicke. Wicke will speak for quite a while before she gives you two Big Malasadas. You’ll need to follow her through the door to reach Secret Lab A.

Speak to the Aether Foundation Employee in the corner of the room to receive DNA Splicers, a Prison Bottle and some Soul Dew. Now walk to the far end of the corridor into Secret Lab B to speak to Wicke again. She’ll give you ten Beast Balls which you’ll need to use in order to capture the Ultra Beasts in Alola.

A Brief Detour

You can also head to the end of the second floor and speak to Gladion. He’ll kindly give you a level 40 Type: Null, which should prove to be useful in battling Ultra Beasts. Gladion will also give you all memory drives, now that you're a Champion.

If you’d like a rematch with Faba, head west of the north exit (1F) and speak to him. After you have defeated Faba, he will give you a Dubious Disc

When you’re ready to begin the Ultra Beast Hunt, head back to the Roadside Motel to start your first mission.

Pokémon (Gift)

UB-01 Symbiont

Check in with Looker and he’ll inform you that an Ultra Beast has been spotted in Wela Volcano Park and Diglett’s Tunnel. You can travel to either of these locations to catch the Ultra Beast so pick your favourite and go there now.

Walk around the area until you encounter the Ultra Beast (the music for Ultra Beasts is different to the music you hear when you usually encounter Pokémon).

Top Tip: To speed up the process of finding the Ultra Beast, use a Repel. Ensure that your lead Pokémon is between level 21 and 54 before using a Repel in this area as the Ultra Beast is level 55 and other wild Pokémon are around level 20.

Nihilego will soon appear and the battle will begin. This Ultra Beast is very weak to Ground-types but is also weak to Steel, Water and Psychic-types. Once its HP is at a quarter of the bar or less, catch it using a Beast Ball.

After catching Nihilego, report back to Looker at the Roadside Motel. After no time at all, another Ultra Beast has been spotted however, this time it’s on Melemele Island.

UB-02 Absorption/Beauty

It’s time for you to head to the other motel on Route 2. Go to the guest room in the hotel and speak to Anabel. You’ll momentarily be joined by Officer Nanu, who you soon realise has had dealings with Anabel, Looker and the International Police in the past.

On this occasion, there are multiple Ultra Beasts to catch and they vary depending on which version of the game you have:

If you’re playing Pokémon Moon, you’ll need to go to Verdant Cavern to catch four Ultra Beasts whereas if you’re playing Pokémon Sun, you’ll only need to catch two in Melemele Meadow.

Looker will give you ten Beast Balls and then you can get going to either Melemele Meadow or Verdant Cavern.

Good to know: If you ever need a reminder of where an Ultra Beast was last spotted or if you run out of Beast Balls, simply talk to Looker and he’ll help you out.

If you’re playing Pokémon Sun, you’ll encounter Buzzwole, which is a Bug/Fighting-type. In order to counter its strong moves, you’ll probably want to pick a Ghost-type Pokémon to battle with. Don’t forget that you can use items such as X Defenses against these trickier opponents.

If you’re playing Pokémon Moon, you’ll encounter Pheromosa, which is also a Bug/Fighting-type however, it has incredibly poor defences and can even be caught while at full HP. Throw out a Beast Ball early on in the battle to capture it.

Once you’ve caught all the Ultra Beasts, make your way back to the Motel on Route 2 and speak to Looker. You won’t have long to rest, as the next Ultra Beast has already been sighted in Lush Jungle. Head back to the other Motel on Route 8 to pick up more Beast Balls. Surprisingly, you also bump into Mina, the artist/Captain from Poni Island who is eager to battle you once again. You can delay this battle if you need time to prepare.

Finally, you can set off for Lush Jungle or Memorial Hill on Akala Island.

UB-03 Lighting

The next Ultra Beast is located in either Lush Jungle or Memorial Hill so pick which location you’d rather visit and make your way there now. Once again, you’ll be dealing with two Ultra Beasts so ensure that you’re prepared for battle.

Run around in the tall grass until the Ultra Beast music begins to play and you’ll soon find yourself face-to-face with the aptly named Xurkitree.

As you’ve probably guessed, this Pokémon is an Electric-type, equipped with some pretty insane moves. As the battle begins, it will receive a Special Attack boost from its aura. It also has other moves that boost its Electric damage so you’ll need to choose the members of your party wisely. Your best bet is to pick a Ground-type Pokémon that is particularly sturdy.

Once you have caught both Xurkitree, report back to Looker and he’ll inform you that another Ultra Beast has been sighted. Go to the guest room in the motel on Route 13 where Looker and Anabel will be waiting to speak to you.

UB-04 Blade/Blaster

As usual, Looker hands you another ten Beast Balls, just in case. Similar to the second Ultra Beast mission, the Ultra Beast that you catch on this mission will vary depending on which game you’re playing. If you're playing Pokémon Sun, UB04 will be on Route 17. If you're playing Pokémon Moon, it will be in Haina Desert. Alternatively, you can head to Malie Garden in either game to locate the Ultra Beast.

If you’re playing Pokémon Sun, head to either Route 17 or Malie Garden and you’ll encounter Kartana, which is a Grass-Steel-type. At a glance, it looks as though it’s very strong but you’ll be able to catch this Pokémon with a Beast Ball while it’s at full health.

If you’re playing Pokémon Moon, make your way to either Haina Desert or Malie Garden and you’ll encounter Celesteela, which is a Steel/Flying-type. Its aura boosts its Defense by two stages so you’ll want to hit it hard with strong Electric and Fire-type attacks.

After catching the Ultra Beast, travel to the Floating Restaurant in Seafolk Village. Here, you’ll have the opportunity to battle Island Kahuna Nanu again, although you can delay the fight if you don't feel up to it right now. All of his Pokémon are Dark-types and each of them has additional attacks spanning Ground, Flying, Electric-type and more.

UB-05 Glutton

Once you have defeated Nanu, you can report back to Looker to receive your final Ultra Beast Mission. Yet again, Looker hands you ten Beast Balls. This time, the Ultra Beast is lurking in Resolution Cave, which is located in the second half of Poni Island. If you haven’t visited this area yet, you’ll want to head there now, starting in Poni Grove.

Head over to Poni Grove & Poni Plains

If you have already explored that area, you'll know exactly where to go and can enter the cave to encounter the final Ultra Beast.

Guzzlord may have substandard Speed and Denfense stats, but it has a lot of health so chipping away at it is fundamental to winning the battle. Its attacks are reasonably strong but it will confuse itself frequently throughout the battle, which makes it easy to target. Hitting it with strong attacks should work fine alongside any status conditions you can dish out.

After Guzzlord has been captured, head back to speak to Looker. You’ll then be sent along to Secret Lab B on Aether Paradise Island. It’s now time to claim your hefty 1,000,000P reward. Congratulations!

If you haven't already, now is a great time to return to each of the Alolan Islands. There are a few new regions that you can explore now that you're a Champion and there are plenty more items to collect. In addition, now that you've captured all of the Ultra Beasts in Alola, a new Legendary Pokémon has arrived on Melemele Island. Travel to Farthest Hollow in Ten Carat Hill to check it out.
